The Green Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii is one of only three green sand beaches in the world and well worth the hike in! When visiting this special place, I optioned not to take a ride in on the back of a truck from one of the locals. I preferred the hike as along the way there is a beautiful coast to see and hiking to destinations like this one always feels so rewarding! The Green Sand Beach on Hawaii's Big Island is the southernmost part of the United States. Formed from a section of the Mauna Loa volcano, the sand is truly green! It gets its green shade from the olivine crystals which are mixed with tiny bits of black lava and white coral. You can see how the wind and water have shaped the giant brown stones lining the beach and creating almost a haven for those on the shore.
